MTV’s Bully Beatdown is a Perfect Place to Learn About Fighting

Growing up as a small kid in Ketchikan, Alaska, there isn’t much to do. So one of the favorite things for people to do (especially if you’re bigger) is to pick on the little guy for entertainment. Now it can come from family, friends, and at school. I sure went through all of the above, I was probably about 100 lbs soaking wet, and graduated at a paltry 110 lbs (if I was lucky). So I got the bullying from everywhere. Home, school, work, you name it, the bully found me. So I grew up with an appreciation for what it means to be a bullying victim.

Bully Beatdown is the ultimate show for ex nerds like myself. Here’s how it works, the bully is offered 10G’s to accept a fight with an MMA professional. They get a possible $5,000 for surviving the 1st round and $1,000 less for each time they get submitted (grappling only). Then they get $5,000 for surviving the 2nd round (kickboxing only), they get nothing in the 2nd if they can’t survive it. (I’ve yet to see a bully survive the 2nd round). All the money that the bully loses goes to the victim(s) of the bully. Sounds awesome right? But, I know what youre thinking, I understand how this works, but what does this show teach me about fighting/how to deal with bullies. You have to look deep into the show to understand, and look underneath the feet and fists that are thrown. Let me explain.

What can you learn from Bully Beatdown? Thats a great question, and heres what you can learn from Bully Beatdown. 1. A little training goes a long way, Michael Westbrook actually didnt do anything too technically advanced in either round, because he didnt have to. The bully was over matched, and Westbrook only pulled a sweet omaplata to a crufix (thats advanced) once. He was fairly nice to him the rest of the fight (well, not nice, but not as bad as he could of hurt him, he did TKO him viciously in the 2nd when he smelled a knockout though). So against your basic bully, you arent going to need much training, unless the size difference is great, and Royce Gracie proved in the first UFCs that if the bully doesnt understand your game and hes bigger than you, and you can drag him to the ground, then he is going down. So get a ground game ad get your hands up to par (at least learn something).

In the 2nd episode (at least the 2nd one I saw). Our hated bully meets his MMA Pro fighter and it is ex NFL player Michael Westbrook and he looks worried and scared. Now, we all can’t have the size and intimidating muscles of Michael Westbrook, but what you can do is let people know that you know people like him. The best way to do this is to wear your shirt of your gym, this is all the better made by actually listing what you train in on the shirt if it doesn’t already list it. Not only will they be intimidated by what you might know (because bullies want easy fights not ones they could probably lose face in) but who you might know. That might be the ultimate deterrent to bullies.

What can you learn from Bully Beatdown? A whole lot and youll get hidden tips from it about how to fight and how to win fights before they begin. Remember to: wear your school affiliation shirt, and to actually learn something. Youll be physically fitter, have more self confidence, and youll actually be able to put down a bully if you have to.
