Triathlon Events - Preparation is the Key to Success

All around the world competitors are pulling on their trainers, checking their road bikes and trying on their wetsuits to make sure they’re all prepared for this year’s triathlon events.

Whether you’re a pro competitor or just an amateur sports person looking for new challenges, your fitness and training programme are the secrets to success in triathlon. Anyone participating in triathlon events, regardless of fitness level, should make sure that their preparation is well planned and started early enough in the year to give them a chance of success.

Triathlon events involve three disciplines, unlike other sporting events that concentrate on only one. A competitor’s overall placement relies on their performance in each discipline equally, so in a discipline that they are weaker they must concentrate on improving it to ensure they don’t affect their final position.

There are three areas to focus on when starting your training schedule for triathlon events: fitness, nutrition and psychological strength. Fitness is the first thing as it is crucial to get your training in progress as quickly as possible when the weather permits. Weekly runs, cycling and swimming sessions in a pool, combined with weight training in the gym, are a good combination to ensure you are fighting fit by the time of the event.

If you’re starting your training schedule in spring many open water lakes won’t be open so it’s important to train in a pool to improve times and distance. The open water lakes will probably open in early May when the water has warmed up to satisfactory level.

To make sure your fitness is fueled properly a well thought out nutrition plan is crucial, so you’re not let down by a lack of nutrients or calories. It is a good idea to consult a nutrition expert before beginning your training, whatever your fitness level. You’ll need a diet that supports your training by providing your body with the right nutrients to perform at its optimum level.

A major factor in triathlon events is mental strength as without this all your training and diet will be worthless. It’s totally important to be in the right frame of mind when training for triathlon events, as well as during the actual event. A positive approach is imperative so you need to be focused and driven to succeed.

There are lots of triathlon events that take place throughout the year that invite competitors of all levels to take part and challenge themselves physically and mentally. They are a great way to push yourself to achieve new goals and enjoy participating with other like-minded competitors.
